Effingham and Leatherhead U15 vs. Tring U15B
Eagles 21 - Tring 7
The Eagles welcomed Tring who travelled down from Hertfordshire only to eventually see the home team continue their winning ways in this hard fought victory.
Thankfully the weather had improved hugely from the torrential rain over the previous 24 hours which allowed both teams to play some fine running rugby. Eagles got the first score after 15 mins when quick ball form a ruck and good interplay between the forwards saw Robert Altomare go over to score. Fly-half Evan Newton made the conversion to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
Tring came back strong and battered the home defence for an extended period and got their just rewards with their forwards driving through the centre field to score close to the post. A conversion levelled the scores.
Eagles retook the lead with wing forward George Goodliff in one of his trademark runs broke several tackle and handing off to score wide left. Newton still had work to do but comfortably took the scores to 14-7 at the break.
The second half saw a similar pattern with the visitors beginning to get to grips with their rucking game and on a number of occasions gaining turn over possession through good body positions in contact. In addition their tackling in open play was text book - always being lower than the ball carrier.
Play developed with the bigger Eagles team beginning to exert growing pressure in the visitors half. This was capped by the try of the game with centre Jack "Slug" Munnings coming in at pace on the diagonal run to sweep through the defence to the try line. Again Newton took care of the afters. The game finished shortly afterwards 21-7 to the home team.
There were good performances from many of the home players but the Man Of The Match for tireless running, ball carrying & commitment went to Alec " Francois" Broomfield. Bloodied but not bowed.
