Old Rutlishians U15 v Effingham and Leatherhead U15.
Old Ruts 17 - Eagles 20
The Eagles travelled to Old Rut's for this important league fixture and got back to winning ways after the holiday break against an opposition who had the misfortune to meet an Eagles team playing committed rugby who hit the ground running.
On a grey day for rugby, the Eagles received the kick-off and immediately launched into a game plan of retained possession and short plays before putting it wide. The home team had no answer for Eagles forward drive & mobility and had barely touched the ball before new boy left wing Callum Maclean jinked his way like a ‘Scottish Salmon in a Border Burn' past the Ruts defensive line and barged over for a first try near the corner.
Ruts had little response to the aggressive driving and close support play of the dominant Eagles' pack , exemplified when No. 8 Alex Broomfield broke several tackle to score near the posts. Eagles soon after disappointingly shipped the ball into the waiting hands of a Ruts centre for an interception try beneath the posts that was converted.
A great forward drive, then crash ball by lock Robert Altomare put the Eagle through to score. 15-7 up at the turnaround soon became 20-7 when no.10 Henry Ball cleverly chipped the defence to see Chris Bradshaw touch down.
The home team came on strong towards the end and deservedly for their efforts scored two tries, one form the base of a 5m scrum, the other a good move through hands down the line with their last play of the game.
Eagles Squad: Bedford, Lawrenson, Angus, Valente, Cassidy, Newton, Ball, Gibbons, Altomare, Bradshaw, McCarthy, Bishop, Smyth, Cooper, Goodliff, Broomfield, Dickinson, Tolley, Byrne, Munnings, Blunt, Maclean.
Scorers: Tries Maclean, Broomfield, Altomare, Bradshaw
MOM: the entire Eagles team - outstanding
