Old Midwives 7 - Eagles 39

The Eagles travelled to Old Midwives for this important league fixture and got back to winning ways against a tough opposition who had the misfortune to meet an Eagles team playing some of their best rugby of the season.

On a day made for rugby, Eagles defended into a strong breeze in the first half. A combination of straight running and support proved to be an effective game plan with Eagles almost scored early on only for the ball to be dropped over the line. This aberration was soon put right when a trademark barging run from Alec Broomfield had him stretch through a number of tacklers to score between the posts.

Midwives had little response to the aggressive driving and close support play of the dominant Eagles' pack, exemplified when wing forward George Goodliff broke several tackle to score out wide.  It was then the turn of Phillip Bedford to score his first league try of the season touching down on the line. Eagles soon after disappointingly opened up allowing the home team full back space to dance his way through to score unopposed under the posts.  The score at half time was 7-17.

The second half was largely one direction with Eagles running in four more unanswered tries. Further tries from back row forwards Tom Calverley & Goodliff as well as first league tries of the season by Ollie Cassidy & Charlie Blunt took the final score to 39-7. The ball in hand running & offloading in the tackle were certainly some of the best this season. Evan Newton slotted a couple of conversions including perhaps his most difficult kick from standing on the side line.

The home team kept going to the end, but their cause was made more difficult when their captain uttered one to many ill advised comments directed at the referee and was sent to the side line for the remainder of the game.
