Eagles 5 – 37 Sutton & Epsom

Juniors U13B • League • Sun 7th Feb 10, 10:00AM

Sutton & Epsom B 39 – 5 Eagles B

At first glance, the scoreline would suggest a pretty one sided game but those who saw the game will know nothing could be further from the truth. The spirit and passion that the boys had shown the previous week against Staines was there again in spades and they did themselves proud in the way they battled throughout the game.

The S&E coach commented after the game that the Effingham forwards had been stronger than their S&E counterparts and it the aggression up front meant that there was plenty of ball for the backs, and with Tom Gathercole, Sam Robinson, George Meek and Benjy Baxter connecting well and consistently breaking through the gain line, the Eagles were unfortunate to only get one score on board.

Ultimately, the difference between the 2 sides was the strength of the two S&E wingers who, once they got momentum, were able to drive and jink their way through the Effingham defence and it was a couple of such moves that meant that the Eagles were 12-0 early on in the game.

Unlike previous weeks when heads dropped, the lads showed their determination and drove S&E back up the field and after a period of play in which they were camped deep inside the opposition 22, Effingham were only prevented from scoring by S&E taking the ball over their own line and conceding the 5m scrum which the boys in green, yellow and black weren’t able to capitalise on.

Played ebbed and flowed either side of the half time whistle, but on 3 more occasions the S&E wingers broke loose and Effingham were staring at a 34 point deficit. Once again, heads stayed up and the lads drove down the pitch and this time got their just rewards as a rehearsed move from the back of the scrum led to Mikey Crowhurst driving over and scoring against his former teammates.

Although S&E scored once more on the final whistle, the Effingham lads came off the pitch to rapturous applause and with their heads held high after an immensely encouraging performance.

While this was first and foremost a great team effort, special mentions must be made of James Hadley whose grit and determination helped inspire the rest of the lads in the pack; the back row of Mikey Crowhurst, Devan Patel and Tom Anderson who constantly put the opposition under pressure; Sam Robinson for aggression going forward coupled with excellent distribution of the ball and George Meek who was a colossus in midfield.

Thank you to all the boys for such a spirited and passionate performance that made the coaches and parents justifiably proud.
