Minis
It is time to fish out a shirt from the bottom of the wardrobe, find some boots and scout around for a gum shield. Then you’ll need to see if they all still fit and probably give all three a jolly good wash! Yes, it must be the start of the new rugby season and eight months of highs and lows, ups and downs, baking sun, freezing rain, blizzards and snow storms; but perhaps some silverware at the end of it all, some terrific friendships made and a great sense of achievement. Our nickname is ‘The Eagles’ and last season no team soared quite so high as the U7s, for which they were awarded the inaugural Rob Allan Cup for the Minis Team of the Year. Now we are embarking upon a new season and anything can happen, which is what makes Minis rugby so exciting or even the 1st XV.
Effingham and Leatherhead Rugby Football Club is a family club run by volunteers, all of us parents ourselves. We have 250 Minis who will be aged under 12 on 1 Sep 11; but none of them would be able to play were it not for the coaches and managers, referees, first aiders, child support officers, membership and fixtures secretaries, helpers in the kitchen, shop and with parking, the Management Board and backroom staff. I would like to thank them all for volunteering and for making such a success of it and hope every parent can find some way of doing your bit too. The common goal for all of us is creating a fun and safe environment for children of all abilities to receive a thorough grounding and development in the sport of rugby.
Coaching sessions are 10am to 12pm on Sunday mornings (10.00am to 11:30 for the U6s). We also play a variety of festivals, triangular tournaments and friendlies throughout the season. Most age groups also organise a tour to different parts of the country and sometimes abroad, and our annual Festival is the most popular club festival in Surrey.
I would like to see us win every game, but whether we win or lose how we behave both as players and parents is absolutely key. The Eagles are known as a very sporting club and that’s probably our greatest accolade. Long may it continue!
Good luck everyone and I’ll come and see you on the touch line.
