Junior Section Statement

The Eagles Junior section starts at U13 and fields 6 age group teams up to U18. The aim of the section is to continue the excellent work done by the Mini section in preparing youngsters to play and enjoy all aspects of Rugby. The ultimate goal is to encourage as many young players as possible to play the game as an adult.

Throughout their time in the section, players continuously learn new individual, team and tactical skills from the Club's qualified year group coaches, augmented by visiting county coaches and regular sessions from Senior Section players. Each Junior year group has a fixture list with local, and not so local clubs, giving them the appropriate balance between coaching and playing.

Each time an Eagles Junior team takes the field it does so with confidence, pride and a will to win. However, whilst winning is always a pleasure, it is the desire to play exciting, quality rugby that motivates Eagles players, coaches and supporters. Surrey is a particularly strong county at Junior level, and the Eagle play in matches against wide ranging opposition.

The Eagles Junior Section also stresses the social side of the game. It is necessary to understand the bond that social traditions bring to rugby players to learn how such a physical game can be played without rancour, and can be controlled by a single official whose word is law. Professionalism now threatens many of our cherished traditions, but thankfully only at the highest level of the game.

Touring has always been very important to the section and last years tours were a great success. Despite providing the most wonderful environment in which to experience the best game in the world, we nevertheless still lose players throughout the teenage years. Sometimes this is because of being too good, such as when players are required by their schools or when they are on county duty. More often it is because of the evils of work, women, exams, hangovers and injuries. However, we always seem to attract as many players as we lose and can always field full teams at all age groups.

To the many teenagers out there who wonder why your mates love rugby, come along for a couple of weeks and see what you are missing. You need no previous experience as long as you have the will to learn and the physical desire to get involved
