Steve Smith
The Youth Development Scheme is now in its 2nd season at the Effingham & Leatherhead RFU club. Steve Smith is the YDS officer and primary contact for all aspects of this programme.

Goals of the programme are:

  • To safely develop our youth players ready for senior rugby
  • To develop improved links with schools
  • To establish commonality of coaching structures - 1st team downwards
  • To address our coaching needs and develop new coaches
  • Develop new referees in senior & junior age groups from junior players & current coaches
  • To share good practice when possible
  • To encourage parents across the club to be more involved in both coaching and refereeing
  • To be seen as a force in Surrey to be reckoned with
  • To continue to develop links with Surrey RFU to use our venue as a centre of good practice

Wonderful News
Last years shirts went to under 16 to 18's players & are regularly seen around our fields & in local schools. As yet not in a fully active mode - but let's take one step at a time

The club is producing 15 more "Academy Referee" shirts to be offered to any junior players from 12 years old upwards to increase our developing referee numbers.

These will be issued with a record log book & a new whistle to any junior with real committment to developing new skills. I already have @ 4 players pestering me for them.

Forth coming events and Information:

We are now near completion of an in house coaching the players & coaches pilot programme directed at the higher age groups of junior rugby.

Dates are on the notice board.

These have been well recieved & reasonable levels of attendance & I am always ready for some feedback about any aspects / topics that we can improve on.

After feedback I can place all sessions on a CD & distribute to age groups who may want to use the resources on their age group as a developement session themselves or I can deliver as required.

Starting again in November will be the "Referee Sessions" as listed below:
         Improve understanding of refereeing decisions & expanding our good parental code of practise

These evening sessions have been productive with across all mini & junior age groups during stage 1 & 2. Sadly I cancelled the last session due to minimal response.

Remember, I am very happy to deliver, but need to have responses on numbers.

The club soon may install a projector which will make these sessions easier to deliver.

Certificates for junior attendees from last seasons refree sessions will be given out on one Sunday soon.

Final dates will be on the club notice boards & also on the "Yahoo" site.

Please note that Training manuals with drills are available on the "Yahoo site".

All these can be down loaded for printing to assist in commonanlity issues & being prepared to "send" another coach to cover one of your sessions.

Please log your attendance with Andrew Robinson or John Coles for your PDR (Personal Development Record) as all coaches will be licensed soon.

  • Prepare individual plans to suit age groups
  • Try to attend yourself or send a group member to any session provided by the YDS programme

  • Numbers of attendees interested ASAP for any session will help me plan for the future with specific topics - the floor is yours
